The Indexing Service, which has been around since Windows 2000, was created to speed up file searches by cataloging local and remote drives. As a single index can take hours to create, many users will find it constantly running in the background and decreasing their PC's overall performance. Personally, I've never noticed a significant change search in speed whether it's on or off. This tutorial provides step-by-step instructions on how to remove Indexing from XP.

After performing a clean install of Windows XP I was shocked to find MSN--Microsoft's own online service--already installed on my machine. Well, not as much shocked as just generally pissed at Microsoft's advertising practices. Luckily, I found a way to clean it off a free up some hard drive space. Checkout the associated URL for the flash tutorial.
