The Indexing Service, which has been around since Windows 2000, was created to speed up file searches by cataloging local and remote drives. As a single index can take hours to create, many users will find it constantly running in the background and decreasing their PC's overall performance. Personally, I've never noticed a significant change search in speed whether it's on or off. This tutorial provides step-by-step instructions on how to remove Indexing from XP.
